Police in the port city of Lavagna arrested two people following the discovery of three tonnes of cheese and cold cuts, valued at €40,000, which were kept in poor hygienic conditions and had expired months ago.

The two businesses selling the products were ordered closed.

Meanwhile in Genoa, a company which produces preserves and sauces has been sued for food fraud, as 600 kilograms of pesto and walnut paste were seized.

The jars were labelled with false indications regarding the quality of the ingredients and the origins of the items, which were made from frozen semi-finished products.

In the coastal town of Rapallo, a bakery was also sued for food fraud, after it allegedly resold baked goods as artisanal products, selling them at twice the price.
