The goal required a simple finish, but came off the back of a defence-splitting reverse through ball by Matheus Henrique to Martin Erlić, who cut it back for Pinamonti to side foot home.
In the second half, Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli saved a penalty from Giacomo Bonaventura.
The Viola remained in fourth place, one point ahead of Bologna, who were held to 1-1 by Genoa.
