The quake hit off the region’s southwestern coast, 15 kilometres from the town of Palmi, at 7:24 am local time, according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology (INGV).
No damage was reported.
However, trains on the Tyrrhenian line between Reggio Calabria and Rosarno were temporarily suspended while engineers checked the tracks for any damage.
The shock was also felt in the Sicilian city of Messina.
The area was subsequently shaken by three smaller aftershocks with magnitudes of between 1.7 and 1.9.
