The man was reported to authorities on charges of aggravated fraud and concealing a body.
Carabinieri police searched his home, finding the body of his 78-year-old mother inside a freezer on the ground floor of the building, investigative sources said.
According to preliminary investigations, the body had been stored in the freezer for approximately two years.
The woman is believed to have died of natural causes and the son allegedly hid her body to continue receiving her pension, investigative sources say.
