However, it’s not every day a human joins them in the crystal waters of one of Rome’s most famous attractions.
A man shocked locals on Wednesday, stripping naked and wading into the fountain.
Police rushed to the scene to wrap the man in a blanket and remove him from the waters as quickly as possible.
In a bizarre twist of events, the skinny-dipper claimed to be a tourist, but was later identified as an Italian citizen carrying a stolen ID card.
The man will be charged with resisting arrest and making false statements, while the famous monument is being examined for possible damage.
This is not the first time skinny-dippers have taken to the Italian capital’s historic fountains.
Last year, a tourist was filmed climbing out of the 17th-century Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi entertaining a large crowd, while six British tourists were fined in 2015 for frolicking naked in the Fountain of the Naiads in Piazza della Repubblica.
It's illegal to jump into the Trevi Fountain, throw rubbish into the water, or fish out any coins.
