Senate Speaker Pietro Grasso and Education Minister Valeria Fedeli attended the march together with Lampedusa Mayor Totò Martello.

During the memorial, a wreath was placed at sea at the site of the shipwreck.

Grasso, Fedeli and Martello said Italy had made "a huge effort" to make sure that such disasters did not occur again.

Their thoughts resounded across the nation.

"Let there never again be such a tragedy as this," Lower House Social Affairs Committee Chair Mario Marazziti said, speaking in Rome.

It was reported that the boat had sailed from Misrata, Libya, but that many of the migrants were originally from Eritrea, Somalia and Ghana.

An emergency response involving the Italian Coast Guard resulted in the rescue of 155 survivors.
