The search continues for two people who are still missing after deadly storms and flash floods battered Marche last week, claiming 11 lives.

Mattia, an eight-year-old boy who was snatched from his mother's arms by the flood waters, and a 56 year-old-woman, Brunella Chiù, remain unaccounted for after the extreme weather of September 15.

Chiù's 17-year-old daughter was among the confirmed victims of the disaster.

Mattia's backpack was found on Sunday some 8km from where he was swept away, sources said.

In spite of this, authorities have thus far been unable to pinpoint Mattia's location.

Inspections were carried out by Civil Protection Chief Fabrizio Curcio in the affected areas, starting from the province of Pesaro (Cantiano, Serra Sant'Abbondio, Frontone, Pergola), as well as in the province of Ancona.

Curcio also attended a meeting at the Relief Coordination Centre (Ccs) at the Marche Regional Civil Protection.
