“Mr President, Dear Frank Walter, it is a great pleasure to meet you and a great honour to have you once again in Italy,” said Mattarella, greeting his German counterpart in Ortigia, the historic centre of Syracuse.
“It is particularly a pleasure for me to have you here in Sicily.
“We have the opportunity to reaffirm, through the municipality award, the intense relationship that binds our two peoples and to exchange a few ideas on the current moment and our extraordinarily excellent bilateral relations.”
Mattarella and Steinmeier are in Syracuse to attend the award ceremony of the Presidents’ Award for municipal cooperation between Italy and Germany, now in its second edition.
On Thursday they will spend the day together at the ancient Roman villa in Piazza Armerina.
