Mattarella met with Premier Dmitry Medvedev and President Vladimir Putin, discussing the situations in Syria and Libya and the relationship between Russia and the EU.
Other topics on the agenda included trade-economic issues, investment and cultural-humanitarian cooperation and joint projects in the energy industry and transport sector.
After arriving in the Russian capital and laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Italian president claimed that the Russian-Italian friendship is "solid" and, despite many difficulties in international relations, "it has remained strong".
