The head of State laid a wreath in Rome’s Via Caetani, where the BR left Moro's body back in the back of a car.
The leftist group murdered Moro after holding him for 55 days, having killed five members of his security detail when they kidnapped him in Rome’s Via Fani.
“Aldo Moro was a man filled with love and respect for democracy and for the State, driven by a spirit of liberty and solidarity,” Mattarella said.
The anniversary coincides with the day Italy dedicates to the victims of domestic and international terrorism.
“We always celebrate this day with great emotion every year,” Mattarella said during a meeting in the Quirinale.
“To remember the long trail of attacks, massacres, political crimes that bloodied the history of our Republic; and which found its moment of remembrance in the anniversary of the assassination of Aldo Moro, whose 45th anniversary occurs today.”
Also at the ceremony were the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, the President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa and the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said “the commitment to never forget the victims of terrorism must never end.
“It is the duty of the institutions to shed light on the darkest pages,” she added.
