His comments came at a joint press conference with Germany’s Frank Walter Steinemeier in Syracuse Thursday.
“Migration is an epochal phenomenon that must be addressed not with stop-gap measures but with a vision of the future,” said Mattarella.
The President added that this was the job of national governments and not his or Steinmeier’s.
Mattarella called for “courageous solutions” on the migrant issue, and not “cosmetic” ones.
