Asked by a fan at The Best FIFA Awards on Monday if he would come to Italy, Mbappé’s response has sent social media into overdrive.

"If I came to Italy, it would only be for Milan," Mbappé said.

This comes one year after an interview published in Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta, in which he professed a long-time affection for the club.

“My connection with Milan is special," he said.

"As a child, I had an Italian nanny and I spent a lot of time with her family, all Milan fans.

"So, thanks to them, I also cheered for the ‘Rossoneri’ and watched a lot of Milan games."

The star footballer's comment at the awards has been met with both excitement and scepticism on social media, with one user questioning if Milan could “even afford 1 per cent of his yearly wages”.

The Best FIFA Football Awards are a gala annual event presented by the world game's governing body.

The first awarding ceremony was held on January 9, 2017 in Zürich, Switzerland.

Categories include best player (men and women), best coach (men and women), best goalkeeper (men and women), a fair play award, a fan award and more.

Argentine Lionel Messi won the best male player at this year's ceremony in Paris, followed by Mbappé and Frenchman Karim Benzema in third place.

Spanish Midfielder, Alexia Putellas, won the best women's player award for the second consecutive year.
