Mel Gibson's planned upcoming filming in Matera of The Resurrection of the Christ, his follow-up to The Passion of the Christ, the controversial 2004 hit that was filmed largely in the iconic cave-dwellings Basilicata town, has been cancelled but the Oscar-winning Braveheart and Apocalypto director may change his mind in the near future, local sources said earlier this week.

According to ANSA sources, the cancellation of filming in the Città dei Sassi has already been communicated to the Municipality of Matera.

However, planned filming in the province of Matera, specifically in Craco and Pisticci, appears to be confirmed.

The filming day in Matera was scheduled for Monday, April 20th in the Murgia Materana Park.

It remains to be seen whether Gibson will opt to film the sequel in the city of Sassi in the coming months, which will recount the hours following the crucifixion until the Resurrection.

There are no indications yet, but local authorities are in contact with the production.

The film is scheduled for release in two parts: the first on March 26, 2027, and the second on May 6 of the same year.
