“Schlein...your face is already a macabre fate,” the graffiti read, accompanied by a swastika.
In a note issued by Palazzo Chigi, the prime minister said the “shameful and ignoble” graffiti “is a gesture to be condemned with absolute determination”.
In a tweet, Ruth Dureghello, President of Rome’s Jewish community, condemned the “unacceptable threats” and called for a “firm reaction”.
“Let us not be intimidated by hatred and violence,” she wrote.
Lawmakers from across the political spectrum have sent messages of support to Schlein.
