“Italy has always been in favour of a Palestinian State, and that’s why I don’t agree with the position expressed by the Israeli prime minister on the matter,” she told Question Time in the House.

But she stressed that “an agreement cannot be requested unilaterally: the premise is recognition by [the Palestinians], of Israel and the right of the Israelis to live in security”.

Meanwhile, Italy supports a US proposal to shift the Israel-Lebanon border by about 7-8 kilometres to ease tension between Hezbollah militants and Tel Aviv, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told journalists in Beirut Wednesday.

“We very much support the proposal to widen the distance between Hezbollah and Israel, we support the US proposal to move the border away by about 7-8 kilometres to avoid any tension”, said Tajani.

The ‘Blue Line’ is the zone of interposition between the two countries in which the UNIFIL buffer and peacekeeping mission is engaged.

The peacekeeping mission has a significant Italian contingent.
