The Tesla and X owner was a big supporter of Trump’s campaign.

“A few hours ago, I heard from my friend Elon Musk,” Meloni said via social media.

“I am convinced that his commitment and his vision can be an important asset for the United States and for Italy, in a spirit of collaboration aimed at facing future challenges.”

Also on Thursday, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said that he wishes Donald Trump well.

Parolin added that he hopes he will end the polarisation that has developed in the country in his new term in office.

“We wish him much wisdom, because that is the main virtue of rulers, according to the bible,” Parolin said.

“I believe that, above all, he has to work to be the president of the whole country and so overcome the polarisation that has occurred, which can be very clearly felt at the moment.

“Then we hope that he can really be an element of détente and pacification in the current conflicts that are bleeding the world.

“He said [his election] will bring wars to an end.

“Let us hope, let us hope.

“Of course, not even he has a magic wand.”

Meanwhile, and in relation to how Trump’s election affects Italy specifically, Italian economic thinktank Prometeia has imagined two potential outcomes as a result of possible tariff increases.

It says tariffs risk costing Italy over 4 billion euros, according to a simulation it carried out.

The first scenario hypothesises an increase of 10 points, but only on products that are already subject to duties, which would result in an additional cost of over 4 billion.

The second scenario simulates a generalised tariff increase of 10 points, in which the additional cost would exceed 7 billion.

In the first hypothesis, the fashion system would take the biggest hit, in the second it would be the engineering sector.
