The picture made the front page of the Wall Street Journal on Thursday, captioned with Bonelli’s plea.

The PM said on social media, “I note the shock of various members of the opposition because I replied to the words of the Green leader Bonelli by ironically covering my face so as not to raise anxiety in my colleague”.

“I say sorry to my colleague and to anyone else may have possibly felt frightened by me.”

The incident occurred during a debate on the situation in Gaza.

The PM had just apologised for calling the MPs “young guys” when Bonelli said Meloni was scaring him with her steely-eyed gaze.
