The PM had a TV in an adjoining room playing Sinner’s winning shot against Daniil Medvedev that earned him Italy’s first male slam win since Adriano Panatta in 1976.

“I wanted to show you something again,” said the PM using the informal ‘tu’ form, “because at that point we were all frozen”.

“How nice to live that moment,” replied Italy’s new sporting darling, unfurling an Italian flag with Meloni.

“The Italy we like: able to believe in itself and to react when faced with tough challenges to win,” Meloni later posted on social media, referring to the 22-year-old’s coming from two sets down for his historic triumph.

“Thanks for the example you gave us, Jannik, to sports lovers, to our young people and to the whole of Italy.”
