Meloni sees Orban for exchange of views before EU summit

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, for an exchange of views on the main topics on the European Council agenda before the start of the meeting, her office at Palazzo Chigi announced Thursday.

The office stressed that Meloni talks to everyone ahead of such important meets.

It said the meetings that Meloni has had in recent hours reflect a “method that confirms what Prime Minister Meloni herself emphasised during her communications to Parliament when she said that making foreign policy means talking to everyone”.

Palazzo Chigi sources noted that Meloni spoke with the President of North Macedonia Vjosa Osmani Wednesday evening, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Wednesday night and then Orban on Thursday morning.

Orban is holding out on agreeing to EU accession talks for Ukraine, with Hungary the only EU member not to agree to the process going ahead.

Orban is a friend of Meloni’s on the European stage despite not being a member of her conservative caucus, instead being an uneasy member of the European People’s Party (EPP).
