Petrocelli, who is a member of the Five Star Movement political party, recently commented on the conflict in Ukraine, accusing Prime Minister Mario Draghi of “intervening” in the war by providing aid after Russia’s invasion.
The Senator vowed to vote against the cabinet in all confidence votes.
Ahead of the mass resignation, Petrocelli said that he was “not stepping down”, maintaining that represents “the Constitution and the will of Italians who are not represented by the parties in power”.
Alessandro Alfieri, one of the members of the commission, explained the reasons behind the mass resignation in a post on Facebook.
“Senator Petrocelli cannot be allowed to promote parallel diplomacy,” the post read.
“He doesn’t consult with other members of the commission and his views are completely at odds with ours.”
The leader of the Five Star Movement, Giuseppe Conte, condemned Petrocelli’s actions last month, after the senator posted a controversial coded tweet expressing his support of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
