LIVERPOOL starting XI (4-2-3-1): Alisson, Alexander-Arnold (subbed for Gomez), Van Dijk, Konaté, Tsimikas, Gravenberch, Mac Allister (subbed for Endo), Salah (subbed for Chiesa), Szoboszlai, Gakpo (subbed for Luis Diaz), Diogo Jota (subbed for Nunez)

The Reds got off to a bad start when Christian Pulisic fired Milan into a third-minute lead, but a fine header from Konate dragged them back into it, before Van Dijk repeated the dose to give them an advantage at halftime.

Dominik Szoboszlai made the most of Cody Gakpo’s run and cross after the break to cement the win in style.

“I didn’t talk to the team at the end of the game,” said Milan manager Paulo Fonesca after the defeat.

“We have several problems. When things are not going well, we lack courage to react, we start making mistakes in buildup.

“Defensively we are fragile … Liverpool was stronger. They’re a stronger team than us. It was not an attitude problem.

“We started the game well, after the two goals from set pieces the team made mistakes. We’ll react for the [upcoming Milan] derby by working and looking at what we did wrong.”
