On Wednesday, Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala blasted the trend of Italian politicians taking to TikTok to seek the votes of young people ahead of the September 25 general election.

Ex-premiers Silvio Berlusconi and Matteo Renzi, the respective leaders of centre-right party Forza Italia and the centrist Italia Viva (IV), recently joined the platform as did former industry minister Carlo Calenda, whose Azione group is allied with IV.

Lega leader Matteo Salvini, Five Star Movement (M5S) Chief Giuseppe Conte and Giorgio Meloni, the head of the right-wing Fratelli D’Italia (FdI) party and favourite to be Italy’s next premier, are also on TikTok.

Sala attacked the trend as he presented the schedule for the upcoming Milano Fashion Week.

“This year Fashion Week will use TikTok a great deal, probably doing it better than many of the politicians who have embarked on this social network in a somewhat pitiful way,” the centre-left politician said.

“Some politicians cross the bounds of human dignity”.
