Possession was roughly level with the visitors creating nine chances to Milan’s 16.
Milan took the lead with a breathtaking goal three minutes before the break. Youssouf Fofana played a perfect ball over the top of the Red Star defence for Rafael Leao to run on to. Leao caressed the ball down with a perfect first touch and blasted past the keeper with his left foot.
Nemanja Radonjic equalised for the away side in the 67th minute with a rocket from outside the box, also with his left and opposite foot.
But Milan stole the three points at the death when substitute Tammy Abraham pounced on a ricochet off the crossbar after a decent save from Belgrade goalkeeper Ivan Gutesa to tap in from close range.
Milan’s remaining two matches are against Girona and Dinamo Zagreb. Two wins should see them automatically qualify for the round of 16.
