Milan are currently sixth on the Champions League table heading into their final game away to Dinamo Zagreb, who are 26th.

The visitors had 58 per cent of the ball and created nine chances to Milan’s 13.

Theo Hernandez hit the crossbar for the Italians in the 24th minute with a scuffed shot that bounced up off the ground.

The only goal of the game came eight minutes before the break when Ismael Bennacer won the ball back for Milan in midfield before playing Rafael Leao through on goal. Leao cut inside his man who tracked back, then outside again before smashing the ball into the roof of the net.

Girona, who kept being denied by the heroics of Mike Maignan, thought they had equalised in the 57th minute with a phenomenal curling shot from just inside the box by Tottenham Hotspur loanee Bryan Gil, but VAR ruled he was offside by a toe.

A win in the last match of the round against Zagreb would guarantee Milan a place in the last 16, but it won’t be easy as the Croatian club will be desperate for a win to qualify for the playoffs.
