“The reason behind doing this futsal tournament is to promote engagement with the Italian community at Monash and more broadly in Melbourne, and to invite people into it,” said Alessandro Salamone, the event officer for the Monash University Italian club.

“[It’s also for those] who might not have Italian heritage, but just love Italy and Italian culture and wish they could experience a little slice of it.

“It’s sort of an open invitation to the rest of the Melbourne and Monash community, saying you’re welcome in our community.

“We want to bring that Mediterranean, welcome openness and hospitality to Monash that Italy is famous for.”

So far, three teams are confirmed to compete—the Monash Italian Club, Interclub Melbourne and the Milan club Melbourne—with a fourth potentially joining late.

Salamone says the event is set to be quite the party.

“We want to bring that sort of Italian passion … to Monash, to all students of all cultural backgrounds,” he said.

“There’s going to be music playing, there’s going to be food, there’s going to be awards for most valuable player and for the best cheer squad. It will be a lot of fun.”
