The 28-year-old woman had got on the bus to travel to hospital after going into labour on the street.

Ticket inspectors fined the woman and left her to walk the rest of the way to the hospital on foot, local media reported.

After giving birth, the woman appealed the fine she’d been slapped with, writing to a Neapolitan newspaper to explain that she had gone out for a walk when contractions began and, frightened, she got on the first bus she saw going in the direction of the hospital.

“The inspector to whom I had explained my condition, instead of accompanying me to the entrance of the emergency room, instructed me to get off,” she told Repubblica.

Naples’ local transport authority ANM initially contested the woman’s appeal, causing widespread outcry.

The authority has now reportedly cancelled the fine.

It released an apology at the weekend on behalf of the “over-zealous” ticket inspectors, and said it wished the new mother and baby well.
