The news comes as the game’s producers announced the launch of “personalised” editions based on major European cities, starting with the coastal city.
Naples was chosen over more popular tourist destinations such as Florence and Venice because "it is a fashionable city in this period", according to Fausto Cerutti, Italy’s country manager for Winning Moves, which holds the rights to the local editions of the game in Europe.
The board features 22 city streets, from Piazza Municipio to Viale Kennedy, as well as elements of local culture.
“However, in creating the game we were careful to avoid stereotypes, so there are no pizzas, mandolins or spaghetti,” Mr Cerutti said.
Forty people worked on the game for more than six months and 12,000 copies have been produced to begin with.
Monopoly was created 70 years ago, drawing inspiration from the streets of Atlantic City in the US.
