After creating Dante figurines for Christmas cribs, the southern Italian city is now devoting an Easter tradition to the famous poet and philosopher.

Master chocolatiers at the historic Gay-Odin factory in Naples have created a two-metre high Easter egg decorated with a portrait of Dante along with some verses from his most revered work, The Divine Comedy.

“For around 30 years, on the occasion of Easter, we have dedicated a giant egg to a great event or character,” the factory’s owner, Marisa del Vecchio, told Italian daily La Repubblica.

“This year the choice could only fall on Dante Alighieri.”

The record-breaking egg was made with 300 kilograms of chocolate and comes ahead of Dantedì, the poet’s national day, which is held on March 25.

The day will be particularly special this year, in light of the 700th anniversary of the poet’s death.
