Oldest woman in the world turns 117

Emma Morano, the world's oldest woman, will celebrate her 117th birthday at her home in Verbania today.

A German TV crew is expected to film the event and Morano will receive a visit from the city's mayor, Silvia Marchionini.

Morano was born on November 29, 1899 in the town of Civiasco, about an hour south of her current home near Lago Maggiore.

A play will be held in her honour at the Il Maggiore Theatre in Verbania this evening, reviewing the last 117 years that in Italy saw three kings, about a dozen presidents and 11 popes.

When asked how she's doing, Morano responded: "I believe well - my doctor says so too".
