One of them has died, while the other was seriously injured.
The survivor reportedly told rescuers that they had decided to cross the tracks, at the centro Vega mall, in order to make an ATM withdrawal at a counter on the other side of the railway station.
The train driver said he saw them suddenly appear on the track and while he made a desperate attempt to brake before impact, but was unable to avoid hitting them.
The victim was named as Manuel Tripargoletti, 25, originally from Cosenza in Calabria, and a resident for some time at Legnago near Verona.
His 23-year-old friend who survived the incident is from Bevilacqua near Verona.
He was reportedly side-swiped by the train and remains in hospital.
