Similar to other regeneration schemes throughout Southern Italy, the Taranto council says it has already been inundated with offers from countries such as the USA and Brazil.
“We’re aiming to set up a residential and touristic network via the sale of property at the symbolic price of one euro to all those willing to take part in the overall restoration project,” the council said in a statement.
Many people, including celebrities, have been taking advantage of the scheme, including Italo-American actress, Lorraine Bracco, of Goodfellas and Sopranos fame.
Bracco recently finished shooting a reality TV show at a house she purchased as a part of the scheme in a Sicilian town.
“This place has made me fall in love with Sicily,” she said.
