The figure came in its annual survey on poverty and social exclusion in Italy published on Tuesday.
“Absolute poverty in Italy affects almost 5.7 million people, nearly a tenth of the population,” said the report.
“The analysis of data has revealed that underpaid and intermittent labour is widespread, with low salaries and atypical contracts preventing a dignified life.”
Young people and families with children are among the most vulnerable, Caritas noted.
The study specifically highlighted that housing represents an emergency in this context, with vulnerable families at risk of finding themselves without a home or in inadequate housing conditions.
In addition, “access to education and new technologies has become an illusion” for many - a situation that “fuels inequality”, Caritas stressed.
