Only the young can save the EU

Berlin, August 22 - Only the young can save the European Union, according to an open letter to European leaders signed by artists, intellectuals and politicians ahead of an Italy-France-Germany summit at Ventotene island on Monday.

The letter addressing Italian Premier Matteo Renzi, French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, was published by the German daily Die Welt.

"We call on you to place the younger generation at the center of a new beginning for Europe," the letter stated.

The youth are "the key to the success of a new Europe", according to the letter signed by the likes of crusading Italian anti-mafia writer Roberto Saviano, French-German politician Daniel Cohn-Bendit, and German film director Wim Wenders among others.
