In the Joan Sutherland Theatre of Sydney Opera House, Lyndon Terracini emphasised the diversity, creativity and progressiveness of the program.
“We are a national opera company and we must belong to the 21st century,” he said.
The statement comes following the wildly successful production of Aida which featured a wholly digital production design.
Terracini wants to revolutionise the way opera is staged and experienced, while maintaining some traditional elements.
The program includes three new digital productions alongside popular revivals and a concert.
Some incredible talents from both Australia and the world are featured.
As Opera Australia’s reputation grows, so too does the list of famous artists leaping to get on the stage.
Returning to Australian theatres next season will be three of the best.
The sopranos Ermonela Jaho and Lisa Lindstrom received critical acclaim for their recent performances in La Traviata and The Ring Cycle, respectively.
The magnificent tenor Jonas Kaufmann will grace the stages in both Sydney and Melbourne.
Accompanying them will be some of the world’s most acclaimed orchestral conductors, including Renato Palumbo the Verdi specialist, Johannes Fritzsch and Massimo Zanetti.
Maestri Pinchas Steinberg, Guillaume Tourniaire and Christian Badea will also return to the Opera House podium, while Australia’s own Daniel Smith will conduct Il Viaggio a Reims by Damiano Michieletto.
In total, seven Australian conducting masters will take part in Opera Australia’s 2019 season, including Benjamin Northey, Nicholas Milton, Dane Lam, Tahu Matheson, Warwick Stengards and Guy Simpson.
Madame Butterfly, Whiteley and Anna Bolena are set to be extravagant new digital productions.
