Bologna had 58 per cent possession and created 19 chances to Empoli’s nine.

The home side went ahead in the 21st minute when Orsolini flicked the ball up to himself in the box and volleyed a goal.

He had a brace in the 66th minute when, after just missing an open goal moments earlier, he shot through a defender’s legs from a tight angle inside the box, leaving the keeper with little time to react.

Orsolini had his hattrick in added time after he sent a cutback from Oussama El Azzouzi into the top corner.

Bologna are eighth on the table while Empoli are 19th.
