Both sides created plenty of chances, with Cagliari having 12 shots on goal compared to Palermo’s 11.

Claudio Ranieri’s men went down 1-0 in the 16th minute when Jacopo Segre got a toe to a Ivan Marconi flick-on after a corner.

The hosts were level just nine minutes later when Alessandro Deiola side-footed home Nahitan Nandez’s cross after drifting into the box to meet it.

Early in the second half, Palermo’s Ivan Marconi was given two yellow cards in the space of five minutes, both for rash challenges.

Gianluca Lapadula made it 2-1 in the 64th minute after taking a deft touch past his opponent on the edge of the box and hitting it sweetly into the far post from just inside.

Cagliari remain fifth while Palermo are eighth with four teams looking to overtake them on matchday 38.
