It was in this spirit that Paolo Liistro celebrated his 90th birthday, surrounded by the love of his family and a community he has helped nurture and sustain over the years.
The celebration took place in Haberfield, in a welcoming function room chosen for its warm and family-friendly atmosphere, with space set aside for children.
Around 70 guests gathered for the milestone occasion that had been carefully organised by his children. Paolo described the event as “a beautiful party”.
But the evening was more than a celebration. It was also a moment to reflect on the man of the hour’s journey.
In his speech, Paolo spoke with emotion about his life and the people who have shaped it: friends, family, his children—“my true wealth”—and that network of relationships which, for migrants, becomes a second home.
Originally from Palazzolo Acreide, in the province of Siracusa, Paolo left Sicily with “a suitcase full of dreams and pockets almost empty”, as he recalled with candour.
It was a leap into the unknown, towards an unfamiliar Australia that would ultimately offer new opportunities and meaningful connections.
Throughout his life, Paolo did not simply build a future for himself, he also left a lasting mark on the Italian community.
He was among the driving forces behind the creation of the Palazzolo Acreide Social Club more than 50 years ago—a vital point of reference for preserving language, traditions and identity far from home.
Paolo served as president for 20 years, stepping down only when his wife fell ill, choosing instead to devote himself fully to his family.
Another significant chapter was his involvement in sport. For years, Paolo coached children and teenagers aged six to 16 at the Abbotsford Soccer Club, passing on not only technical skills but also values such as discipline, fairness and team spirit.
“Memories I carry in my heart,” he said with gratitude.
Paolo Liistro’s 90th birthday was a tribute to a full life shaped by migration, community, love and dedication. “If I am here today, it is thanks to all of you,” he told the room.
On that day, everything important to Paolo was honoured: the Sicily left behind, the new life built day by day and a story that continues to live on in the eyes of those who stand beside him.
