The European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut landed in Kazakhstan on schedule at 9:38 am Italian time with fellow crew members, Randy Bresnik of the United States and Sergei Ryazansky of Russia.

To celebrate the final day of his mission to the International Space Station, Mr Nespoli shared a captivating time-lapse video of Italy lit up at night.

Having spent almost five months in space for the mission, the Lombard astronaut was back on Earth in just three hours, as the spacecraft travelled at 28,000 kilometres per hour.

At 60 years old, Mr Nespoli is the ESA’s oldest working astronaut and holds the record for the most days spent in space by an Italian astronaut.
