The home side took the lead in under 12 minutes thanks to some brilliant teamwork, passing out from the back all the way up to Kyogo Furuhashi, who managed to squeeze his shot through the legs of Ivan Provedel.

Lazio equalised in the 29th minute through Matias Vecino, whose extremely delicate header was enough to just get the ball over the line.

With the scores locked at 1-1, the Scottish champions thought they had nabbed a late winner when Luis Palma fired home in the 81st minute - only for his effort to be ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR check.

There was a bigger blow to come when former Barcelona and Chelsea forward Pedro headed home from fellow substitute Matteo Guendouzi’s cross five minutes into stoppage-time to secure a 2-1 win for the Italian club.

“I’m bitterly disappointed. I felt we totally deserved to take something from the game,” Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers said.

Lazio joined Atletico Madrid on four points from two games, with the Spanish side twice coming from behind to win 3-2 against Feyenoord.
