Sent to Italian Premier Paolo Gentiloni and Civil Protection Chief Angelo Borrelli, the request read that around 2,000 hectares of land had been burned so far. 

“Unfortunately we can't see a significant improvement in conditions and the state of maximum alert remains until the start of next week, a situation that makes the maximum presence of resources and people necessary,” Chiamparino said on Friday.

A pall of black smoke has hung over the city of Turin following days of wildfires, the regional environmental agency said on Friday. 

The agency added that fine particles have reached four times the permitted limit. 

The Turin council recently urged residents to keep their doors and windows shut because of the smog, which has reached as far as the Aosta Valley on the French border.
