The incident occurred at Piazza della Liberta, in the centre of Rome, where up to 2500 Lazio fans gathered on Tuesday night at the site of the club’s foundation.
Shortly after midnight, around 300 fans, with their faces concealed, broke away from the crowd and began throwing bottles and other objects at police.
Officers responded with tear gas and water cannons.
Eight officers were reported to have injuries, mostly with cuts and bruising.
One person was arrested and three others detained, all with links to the club’s infamous “ultra” fans.
All will receive DASPO Urbano exclusion orders, a “Sports Event Access Ban”.
