Police seize major quantity of cocaine at Gioia Tauro
Italian police on Friday seized 150 kg of cocaine at the Calabrian container port of Gioia Tauro, one of the largest in Europe, and the entry point that Italy’s richest and most powerful mafia organisation ‘Ndrangheta uses to bring in much of the cocaine it handles.
Piantedosi said the successful operation at Gioia Tauro not only highlights the dedication and vigilance of law enforcement agencies, but also emphasises the government’s commitment to curbing the influence and activities of criminal syndicates. (Photo: ANSA)

The cocaine was found hidden in a banana shipment from South America via Panama.
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi hailed the seizure as a “major blow against narco trafficking”.
‘Ndrangheta controls much of the cocaine that reaches Europe from South America.
