Second place goes to Nardò in Puglia, third to Baunei in eastern Sardinia, fourth to Domus De Maria in southern Sardinia and fifth to Castiglione della Pescaia in southern Tuscany.

As for lake resorts, Molveno near Trento is top and Appiano sulla Strada del Vino near Bolzano second, both in the Trentino Alto Adige (South Tyrol) region.

Third is Massa Marittima near Grosseto in southern Tuscany.

In all, 33 spots around Italy got the Five Sails award.

Meanwhile, over 95 per cent of Italy’s bathing coastline is in excellent condition and quality, the National System for the Protection of the Environment, SNPA, said Thursday.

SNPA, a public network of environmental agencies formed by the national agency ISPRA and regional ARPAS, updated the classification of stretches of coast used for bathing.

The kilometres of coastline in ‘excellent’ quality reach very high percentages in every region, with peaks of over 98 per cent in Puglia (99.7 per cent), Friuli Venezia Giulia (99 per cent), Sardinia (98.4 per cent) and Tuscany (98.2 per cent).
