“The Holy Father has ordered Msgr. Gaenswein to return for the time being to his diocese of origin” in Freiburg, Germany, said the Vatican.

Following completion of his assignment as Prefect of the Papal Household at the end of February the German prelate declared his loyalty to Pope Francis and said he hoped the pontiff still trusted him after publishing a tell-all book after Benedict’s death in January.

His book suggested there had been friction between the two popes, allegedly including over Francis’s decision to reimpose restrictions on the traditional Latin Mass, and his softer line on moral matters, such as homosexuality.

The memoir “Nothing but the Truth: My Life Beside Benedict XVI” did not intend to create “wars” within the Church, Gaenswein told veteran Italian journalist Bruno Vespa in an interview.

“My only goal was to provide clarity even on points where there were many problems.

“Clarity means telling and providing the truth for all who wanted to know.

“No wars, no factions, I just wanted to give my testimony of the real things that happened,” he said.
