Pope to be discharged from hospital on Friday

Pope Francis will be discharged from Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Friday after undergoing abdominal surgery to repair a hernia caused by a 2021 operation last week, the Vatican press office said on Thursday.

“The health team that is following Pope Francis has confirmed the Holy Father’s discharge from Policlinico A. Gemelli on the morning of tomorrow, Friday, June 16,” said Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni.

On Wednesday the Vatican press office said the pope’s clinical course was proceeding regularly following his surgery last Wednesday and that medical staff were “planning his discharge for the next few days”.

Earlier on Thursday the Pope went to visit children at a paediatric oncology ward at the hospital.
