The suspects are under investigation for alleged mafia association, extortion, drug trafficking, illegal possession of weapons, and violation of the obligation of special surveillance, among other crimes.
Sixteen people have been placed under pre-trial detention and two people under house arrest.
The investigation has dismantled one of the richest clans in the Sicilian regional capital.
“They have a city in their hands,” one wire-tapped suspected mafioso reportedly said, referring to the clan’s top management.
