Carnieri stated that the decision would have a global effect and would fuel anti-abortion propaganda in Italy.
“This is a systematic attack on women’s rights and independence,” she said.
“It’s inconceivable that, as a society, we have regressed and are forced to fight the same battle that began so many decades ago.
“The conservative mentality has worsened and all our freedoms are being questioned.
“There will be women in Italy who feel the brunt of this ruling and I’m certain we’ll see more anti-abortion propaganda here.”
Writer and feminist Dacia Maraini commented on the decision, expressing her hope that Italy will not follow suit.
“I hope that Italy won’t be stupid enough to copy America,” she said.
“I don’t think it’s at all likely that legislation would pass.”
Minister for Family and Equal Opportunities Elena Bonetti, who belongs to the centrist Italia Viva party, expressed her dismay at the ruling.
“The abolition of Roe v. Wade will see a growth in backyard abortions and will put a great number of women in danger,” she stated.
“This violates the dignity and rights of women everywhere.”
A member of an Italian pro-abortion gynaecologists association, Silvana Agatone, shared her indignance, stating that “clearly some people want to see the direct result of this decision: women dying from secret abortions and being coerced into keeping unplanned pregnancies.”
Leader of the Italian Left party, Nicola Fratoianni, followed suit.
“What is coming from the US Supreme Court is not a breeze – it is a foul-smelling wind made up of prejudice and a hatred of women’s freedom,” he said.
“The conservatives want to push women and their rights back a century.
“We won't let them.”
