A court of first instance found Don Emanuele Tempesta, a 32-year-old former assistant parish priest at Busto Garolfo near Milan, guilty of assaulting over 20 children over several years.
Prosecutors had requested an 11-year term.
Tempesta will not go to jail until Italy’s two-tier appeal system is exhausted.
The more than 20 civil plaintiffs received damages ranging between 750 and 2000 euros each.
