Ambrogio Iacono, 52, became a symbol of the anti-COVID fight by continuing to do distance teaching from his hospital bed.

He has yet to get tenure on the bay of Naples island despite having won not one but three competitions for steady teaching jobs.

Iacono therefore wrote to Mattarella last week saying, “Dear President, sadly I’m still precarious, but the passion for this activity leads me to do all I can to try to get a steady post having won three competitive hiring exams”.

The professor, who was also the protagonist of one episode of State broadcaster Rai’s New Heroes, kept teaching online despite having come down with a serious bout of COVID-19 for which he was hospitalised.
