25-year-old Matteo Concetti, from the Marche town of Fermo, was found dead in his cell in the penitentiary where he was being held in solitary confinement.
For now, the investigation, triggered by a complaint filed by Concetti’s mother, is against unknown persons.
The public prosecutor has also ordered the body to be seized pending an autopsy, which will probably take place on Friday.
On the basis of the Concetti’s judicial and medical records and those concerning his transfer from Fermo prison to Ancona, investigators want to establish whether his mental health condition was compatible with prison detention.
